Strong Smell of Cannabis Noted at Las Vegas F1 Grand Prix
As the Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend kicks off in Las Vegas, drivers have expressed their surprise at the pervasive smell of cannabis around the circuit. With marijuana being legal in Nevada, the aroma has become a notable aspect of the event. Sergio Perez from Red Bull and Franco Colapinto from Williams were among those commenting on the situation during the first day of testing on Friday. Perez remarked, "What is very noticeable on the circuit is the smell of marijuana throughout the night," indicating that it has become a topic of conversation among the drivers.
Colapinto added humor to the situation, joking, "If they do a doping test on us now, I think we'll all be positive!" His lighthearted comment reflects a growing trend where athletes have noted similar experiences at other events, such as the US Open in New York last year. The legalization of cannabis in various states has led to such occurrences becoming more common at sporting events.
Challenges Faced by Drivers on the Las Vegas Circuit
The Las Vegas street circuit, which debuted last year, has presented its own set of challenges for drivers. Colapinto described the track conditions as "very dirty" and lacking grip, leading to difficulties during the practice sessions. He noted, "Practice one looked like a rally track, there was dirt everywhere. You couldn't see anything, it was a difficult day." Despite these challenges, Colapinto managed to complete almost 60 laps during the practice sessions, testing different tire compounds in preparation for the upcoming race.
While Colapinto finished in 17th and 18th positions in the practice sessions, he remains optimistic about his performance as he gears up for qualifying and the main race scheduled for Sunday. The event continues to attract attention not only for the racing but also for the unique atmosphere surrounding the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
