Former Bolivian President Claims Assassination Attempt
Evo Morales, the former president of Bolivia, has alleged that he was the target of an assassination attempt following an armed attack on his vehicle. The incident, which occurred in the Chapare region, involved at least 14 shots fired at his car, resulting in injuries to his driver. In a radio statement on Sunday, Morales accused the current president, Luis Arce, of orchestrating the attack, stating, "Arce will be known as the worst president in history. Shooting a former president is the last line."
Morales condemned Arce's government for resorting to violence instead of engaging in political discourse, claiming that this was indicative of the administration's inability to defeat him politically. He asserted, "Arce has destroyed Bolivia, and now he wants to eliminate our movement by putting an end to Evo's life. We will see how we prepare... There is a state of siege underway."
A video shared on social media showed the aftermath of the attack, with visible bullet holes in the windshield of Morales's pickup truck and his driver appearing injured. Morales, who served as Bolivia's president from 2006 until his resignation in 2019 amid allegations of electoral fraud, has announced his intention to run for president again in the 2025 elections. He aims to unify the divided Movement Towards Socialism party, which has faced internal strife due to corruption allegations against some of its ministers.
