EU Opens Accession Negotiations with Albania
The European Union has officially initiated accession negotiations with Albania, marking a significant step in the country's journey towards EU membership. During a meeting in Luxembourg, the EU opened the first cluster of negotiations titled 'Fundamentals,' which encompasses five thematic chapters. European Commissioner for Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, announced this milestone on social media, commending Albania for its commitment and determination in completing the necessary reforms for EU integration. This development allows for the progression into subsequent negotiation clusters, further solidifying Albania's aspirations to join the EU.
Italy Transfers Migrants to Albania Under Controversial Agreement
In a separate yet notable development, Italy has transferred its first group of migrants to Albania, a historic move for an EU member state. This transfer, facilitated by the Italian Navy patrol boat Libra, is part of a controversial agreement established in late 2023 between Italy's government led by Giorgia Meloni and Albania. The agreement, costing Italy approximately €160 million annually, aims to create two centers in Albania where migrants can apply for asylum.
The transfer involves adult men intercepted by the Italian navy in international waters, with reports indicating that the initial group consists of migrants from Bangladesh and Egypt. Upon arrival in Albania, migrants will undergo identification and processing in designated centers, where they will be held under administrative detention while their asylum applications are evaluated. The Italian government has emphasized the provision of assistance in these centers, although criticisms regarding living conditions and restrictions have emerged from various quarters, including opposition leaders.
