Egypt Removes 716 Names from Terrorism Lists
In a significant legal development, the Egyptian Criminal Court has approved the Public Prosecution's request to remove 716 names from its terrorism lists. This decision was announced on Sunday, November 24, 2024, and reflects the state's ongoing efforts to reassess individuals included on these lists. The Public Prosecution stated that this action is part of a broader strategy to review the status of those labeled as terrorists, particularly focusing on individuals whose activities against the state have ceased.
The Attorney General, Mohamed Shawky, presented the case to the Criminal Court, which subsequently agreed to the removal of the names. According to the Public Prosecution, investigations by security authorities indicated that these individuals had stopped their illegal activities against the state and its institutions. However, the updated lists of those removed have not been released, leaving the specifics of the individuals involved unclear. The Public Prosecution also noted that they are continuing to review the status of the remaining individuals on the terrorism lists, preparing to remove others whose activities have similarly ceased.
This move aligns with the Law Regulating Lists of Terrorist Entities and Terrorists in Egypt, established in 2015, which allows for the periodic review of individuals on these lists. The law stipulates that inclusion on such lists is accompanied by severe consequences, including asset seizures, travel bans, and placement on arrival watch lists.
