Known as the 'capital of resistance and liberation,' Bint Jbeil has a rich past marked by its defiance against various occupiers, from the Persians to the Israelis. This district, part of the Nabatieh Governorate, is divided into 36 municipalities and five neighborhoods, with Bint Jbeil Municipality serving as its capital. The area spans approximately 260 square kilometers and is home to around 58,000 residents, although many have migrated abroad due to political and economic challenges.
The district is renowned for its agricultural productivity, particularly in tobacco cultivation, which historically dominated local industries. Other significant crops include grapes, wheat, and olives. Notably, Bint Jbeil was once famous for handcrafted shoe manufacturing, a tradition that has dwindled over the years, leaving only a few factories in operation today. The region's economy also includes limited factories for aluminum and confectionery.
Bint Jbeil is rich in historical landmarks, such as Tibnin Castle, a Crusader-era fortress built in 1105 AD. This castle not only served as a military stronghold but also played a crucial role in trade routes connecting Egypt and the Arabian Peninsula. The district's archaeological significance is underscored by discoveries of ancient catacombs and artifacts from the Phoenician and Roman eras, linking it to the legendary Phoenician Princess Shams.
The district has been a focal point of resistance, particularly during the Israeli occupation and conflicts such as the July 2006 war. Bint Jbeil's strategic importance and its historical battles have shaped its identity, earning it the nickname 'Cursed City' from Israeli forces due to the fierce resistance encountered there.
