Combat the Heat: Essential Tips to Stay Cool During Extreme Weather

Learn how to stay cool during extreme heat with these essential tips. From proper ventilation to using plants for natural cooling, discover effective ways to combat the summer heat.

The hot weather that has been prevalent in recent days will continue, although a minor relief in heat loads is expected. Extreme heat stress will persist in regions such as the southern Golan, lower Galilee, northern valleys, Jordan Valley, Judean Desert, Dead Sea, eastern Negev, and Arabah. Heavy to extreme heat loads are anticipated in these areas from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. Additionally, in the north of the Golan, the lowland, central mountains, north of the Negev, Negev, south of the Negev, and Eilat mountains, heavy heat loads are expected between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM.

On Thursday, the weather will be partly cloudy to clear with temperatures remaining higher than usual for the season. Moderate to heavy heat loads will be experienced in most parts of the country, with extreme heat loads in the Negev and along the Syrian-African divide, including the Golan Heights. The Mediterranean Sea will be comfortable to rough with waves 40-80 centimeters high, and water temperatures between 28 and 29 degrees. Lake Kinneret will have waves 20-40 centimeters high and a water temperature of 30 degrees. The Red Sea will have waves 20-40 centimeters high and a water temperature of 26 degrees. Few jellyfish are present near the beach but not in large swarms.

Friday’s weather will remain largely unchanged, with heat loads similar to Thursday. Extreme heat loads will continue in the Negev, Golan Heights, and northern valleys. On Saturday, a slight drop in temperatures is expected mainly in the mountains and inland, but heat loads will remain similar to Friday. Another slight drop in temperatures is projected for Sunday, bringing them to normal levels for the season, although heat loads will still be felt.

To combat the summer heat, it is advisable to keep windows and doors closed during the day and only ventilate when the temperature outside is lower than inside, preferably in the morning, evening, or at night. Utilizing fans instead of air conditioners can save on costs and electricity. Darkening windows with roller shutters, interior blinds, or sun protection film can prevent heat buildup. Placing plants indoors and outdoors can also help cool down the environment by increasing humidity through evaporative cooling.

  • In summer, it is common for temperatures to rise above 30 degrees, making it unbearably hot indoors. Proper ventilation is crucial to reduce sweating. The term 'summer mode' for windows is irrelevant; what matters is the correct adjustment of window contact pressure to keep out heat in summer and cold in winter.
  • When the heat becomes unbearable, opening windows and doors may seem like a solution, but it only cools people temporarily as sweat evaporates. The heat from outside can warm up floors, furniture, and building components. Keeping windows closed during the day and ventilating only when it is cooler outside can help maintain a cooler indoor environment.
  • Plants can be an effective way to cool down without using energy. Through photosynthesis, they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen and water, increasing humidity and lowering the temperature of their surroundings. Placing plants in front of windows can protect against direct sunlight and provide additional insulation if climbing plants are used on house walls.
  • External sun protection such as roller shutters is the best way to prevent heat from building up indoors. Sun protection films or interior roller blinds with reflective surfaces like aluminum slats are good alternatives.
