On October 14, 2024, China initiated significant military exercises, named "Joint Sword 2024B," around Taiwan, deploying aircraft and naval vessels in a show of force. The Chinese Defense Ministry stated that these maneuvers aim to test the operational capabilities of its military forces and serve as a warning against what it terms the "separatist actions" of Taiwan's independence advocates.

The exercises are taking place in various strategic areas surrounding Taiwan, including the north, south, and east of the island. Captain Li Shi, spokesperson for the Eastern Command of the Chinese military, emphasized that the drills focus on enhancing combat readiness for both air and naval operations, including potential blockades and attacks on key targets. In response, Taiwan's defense ministry condemned China's actions as "irrational and provocative," asserting that it has deployed adequate forces to ensure the protection of its sovereignty and democratic values. Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has called for a high-level security meeting in light of these developments, reflecting the heightened state of alert within Taiwan following recent tensions with Beijing.

The situation has drawn international concern, particularly from the United States, which criticized the Chinese maneuvers as "unjustified." U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller expressed deep concern over the potential for escalation in the Taiwan Strait, reiterating the U.S. commitment to Taiwan's defense as its main arms supplier. The U.S. has historically recognized Beijing as the legitimate government of China, while maintaining strong unofficial ties with Taiwan, which operates as a self-governing entity.

These military exercises come in the wake of Taiwan's National Day celebrations, during which Taiwanese officials reiterated their stance against China's claims.
