Casualties and Evacuations Following Luotobi Laki-Laki Eruption
The Luotobi Laki-Laki volcano in eastern Indonesia erupted violently, resulting in at least 10 fatalities and the evacuation of several villages. The Indonesian disaster management agency confirmed the casualties on November 4, 2024, as lava flows ignited wooden structures, including homes and a convent of Catholic nuns, leading to widespread destruction. The eruption, which occurred during the night, also released significant amounts of ash, blanketing nearby areas and exacerbating the disaster.
State of Emergency Declared
In response to the eruption, authorities have declared a state of emergency in the affected regions until December 31. The National Volcanology Agency has raised the alert level for the volcano to its highest status, advising residents and tourists to maintain a safe distance of at least 7 kilometers from the crater. Thousands of residents from five nearby villages have been evacuated as a precautionary measure, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
