Serious Bus Accident in Barcelona Injures Dozens
A serious bus accident occurred on the C-32 motorway between Santa Susanna and Palafolls in Barcelona on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at around 9:00 a.m. The bus, carrying 60 workers from the textile company Inditex, crashed and ended up vertically in front of a tunnel, resulting in numerous injuries.
Details of the Accident
According to the authorities, the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the side wall of the tunnel. The impact caused the bus to stand upright. Videos on social media showed the dramatic scene. Preliminary reports from La Vanguardia suggest that a tire burst might have caused the driver to lose control, leading to the collision with the safety barrier and the subsequent vertical positioning of the bus.
Rescue and Medical Response
Rescue operations were swift, with 24 firefighters, two helicopters, and around 15 ambulances deployed to the scene. Out of the 60 passengers, 52 required medical attention. Three individuals, including the bus driver, are in critical condition and were airlifted to the hospital. Five others were transported by ambulance. The C-32 motorway remained closed for several hours as emergency services worked to clear the wreckage and ensure the safety of the area.
Previous Incidents and Safety Concerns
This accident adds to a series of recent bus accidents in Europe, raising concerns about road safety. Just last year, a bus crash in Venice resulted in the deaths of three Germans, and another serious accident occurred in Germany in March 2024. The incident in Barcelona highlights the importance of stringent safety measures and regular vehicle maintenance to prevent such tragedies.
