Biden's Determination to Continue His Presidential Campaign
US President Joe Biden has announced his unwavering commitment to continue his re-election bid, despite growing concerns about his mental health and the viability of his campaign. In a letter to congressional Democrats, Biden emphasized the importance of defeating Donald Trump and urged the party to unite. He stated, "We have one job. And that is to beat Donald Trump. Any weakening of the resolution or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us all."
Growing Concerns Among Democratic Lawmakers
In the wake of a lackluster debate performance, several top House Democrats have expressed concerns about Biden's ability to secure a Democratic victory in November. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other influential party members have been approached by lawmakers urging Biden to step aside. Despite these pressures, Biden has reached out to about 20 House Democrats and party leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Congressmen Nancy Pelosi and James Clyburn, to assure them that their concerns are being heard. Schumer and Clyburn have since expressed their support for Biden, while Jeffries has remained silent.
Biden's Campaign Strategy and Support
Biden's campaign is actively engaging with major donors and supporters to bolster confidence in his candidacy. Campaign chairwoman Jen O'Malley Dillon has been leading calls with the national finance committee, defending the president's health and addressing concerns about his debate performance. Maryland Governor Wes Moore, who supports Biden, acknowledged voters' concerns but emphasized the importance of honesty and continued support for the president. Additionally, First Lady Jill Biden is scheduled to campaign in key states to rally support for her husband.
Despite the mounting pressure, Biden remains resolute in his decision to stay in the race, stating that only "divine power" could convince him to stop his campaign. Vice President Kamala Harris has also shown her support, describing Biden as dedicated to fighting for Americans and ready to continue the battle against Trump. The upcoming general election on November 5 will determine whether Biden can secure another four years in office.
