The Commemoration of D-Day in Normandy Highlights the Cost of Freedom
US President Joe Biden delivered a poignant speech at the 80th-anniversary event of the Allied landings on the northern shores of France, emphasizing the price of freedom. 'History teaches us that freedom does not come for free. If you want to know what its price is, come to the beaches of Normandy,' Biden stated. The event saw the presence of hundreds of war veterans and leaders from 25 countries, held against the backdrop of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, which colored the leaders' speeches about tyranny and the importance of the rule of law. Biden reflected on the current global climate, pointing out that democracy is at its greatest risk since World War II.
Although the USSR played a crucial role in defeating the Nazis, representatives from Moscow were not invited to this year's commemoration due to the invasion of Ukraine. 'The Ukrainians fight with extraordinary courage, suffer great losses and do not retreat. The US and NATO, along with a coalition of more than 50 countries, stand by Ukraine,' Biden remarked. He emphasized the importance of resisting autocrats and dictators, warning that the outcome of the conflict in Ukraine is being closely monitored by the world's autocrats.
A Moving Tribute and a Message of Unity
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife, Olena, were warmly received at the ceremony. A touching moment occurred when 99-year-old American veteran Melvin Hurwitz, in a wheelchair, met Zelensky. The two shared an emotional exchange that highlighted the continued struggle for freedom. Zelensky, visibly moved, hugged the veteran warmly. 'You are saving your people,' Hurwitz told Zelensky, who replied, 'You saved Europe.' The audience applauded as Hurwitz requested a picture with Zelensky.
Before the event, French President Emmanuel Macron awarded the Legion of Honor to 11 veterans who participated in the D-Day landings. The ceremony underscored the enduring legacy of those who fought for freedom, and the importance of remembering and honoring their sacrifice.
- From Atlanta, Georgia, a special flight carried veterans to Normandy for the 80th anniversary commemorations. Forty-eight veterans, many of them centenarians, were flown by Delta Air Lines in partnership with the Best Defense Foundation and Michelin USA. This initiative has been ongoing for three years, encapsulating the spirit of remembrance and honoring those who served.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also set to deliver a speech to the French National Assembly on June 7, amidst the commemorative activities. His visit, however, has not been without controversy, with some viewing the timing of the invitation as politically motivated, just days before the European elections. Marine Le Pen, the president of the National Rally deputies, criticized the perceived manipulation and exploitation of the conflict by French President Emmanuel Macron.
