Beit Lahia Declared a Disaster Area Amid Ongoing Bombardment
The municipality of Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip has officially declared the city a "disaster area" due to the catastrophic humanitarian situation resulting from the ongoing Israeli military operations and siege. For 26 days, residents have endured a blockade that has cut off access to essential supplies, including food, water, and medical aid. The municipality's urgent appeal highlights the dire conditions, stating that the city is devoid of hospitals, first aid services, and communication, urging the international community to intervene immediately.
Urgent Appeals for Humanitarian Aid
The local authorities have outlined five critical demands directed at international organizations and governments. These include calls for pressure on Israeli forces to cease hostilities, the establishment of safe corridors for aid delivery, and the provision of essential resources such as fuel for water and sewage systems. Additionally, there is a pressing need for heavy machinery to clear debris and facilitate emergency responses. The Civil Defense in Gaza reports that over 1,000 fatalities have occurred since the siege began, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to rescue those trapped under rubble and provide medical care.
Continuous Air Strikes and Civilian Casualties
The situation remains dire as Israeli air strikes continue to target residential areas. Reports indicate that artillery shelling and air raids have resulted in numerous civilian casualties, including women and children. In the southern Gaza Strip, recent attacks have led to multiple deaths and injuries, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. Since the onset of hostilities on October 7, 2023, the conflict has resulted in more than 144,000 casualties, with a significant number of those being vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly. The ongoing violence and blockade have created a severe famine, leading to widespread suffering among the civilian population.
