Voter Turnout Soars in Algerian Presidential Elections
In a significant development for Algeria's democratic process, the head of the Independent National Authority for Presidential Elections, Mohamed Charfi, revealed that the participation rate in the recent presidential elections reached an impressive 48.03%. This figure marks a noticeable increase compared to the 41.14% recorded during the last elections in 2019. The turnout among the Algerian diaspora was also noteworthy, standing at 19.57%. Charfi attributed the delay in announcing these figures to adverse weather conditions affecting results from regions such as Bechar and Tamanrasset.
As the nation awaits the preliminary results, which are expected to be announced today, the elections saw approximately 24 million voters called to participate. Polling stations were kept open for an additional hour to accommodate a greater number of voters, responding to requests from several states. The elections featured three candidates: current president Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Youssef Ouchich of the Socialist Forces Front, and Abdelali Hassani Cherif, leader of the Movement for a Peaceful Society. Initially scheduled for December, these elections were moved up to September 7 following Tebboune's announcement in March.
