Celebrating Storytelling: Al Jazeera Documentary Days 2023

The Al Jazeera Documentary Channel has successfully organized the third edition of the Al Jazeera Documentary Days in Sarajevo, Bosnia. This annual event celebrates the art of storytelling and aims to connect decision-makers with promising documentary projects from around the globe. The sessions were held alongside the Al Jazeera Balkans Documentary Film Festival (AJB DOC), facilitating a platform for collaboration and support for emerging talent in the documentary filmmaking industry.

Growing International Interest in Documentary Projects

Session coordinator Rudy Batignol noted an increasing international interest in the Al Jazeera Documentary Days, stating that each edition has drawn more attention from decision-makers and international projects seeking high-quality documentaries. Director of Al Jazeera Documentary Channel, Ahmed Mahfouz, highlighted the unprecedented number of projects submitted this year, complemented by the involvement of 80 experts dedicated to evaluating and supporting these documentaries.

A Unique Atmosphere for Filmmakers

The warmth and welcoming environment of the Al Jazeera Documentary Days was particularly appreciated by Asya Makarevich from the Berlin International Film Festival, who remarked that it offers a unique atmosphere often absent in larger festivals. Adham Futchu, director of the AJB DOC, emphasized the attendance of prestigious European and international institutions at this year’s event. Launched in 2021, the Al Jazeera Documentary Days continues to thrive, showcasing 24 documentaries that tackle critical global issues, including violence against Palestinians and political turmoil, under the theme of “Justice.”
