Al Jazeera Calls for Accountability After Cameraman Injured in Gaza
Al Jazeera Network has condemned the Israeli occupation forces for targeting its crew in Jabalia camp, northern Gaza Strip, resulting in serious injuries to cameraman Fadi Al-Wahidi. The network is urging the international community to take immediate action to protect journalists and civilians in the region. The deliberate targeting of journalists is a violation of international laws, and Al Jazeera emphasizes the need to hold the Israeli forces accountable for their actions.
Fadi Al-Wahidi was shot in the neck and is currently in critical condition at Baptist Hospital. Another Al Jazeera cameraman, Ali Al-Attar, is also in critical condition at European Gaza Hospital after being hit by shrapnel during an Israeli bombardment. Medical sources report that Al-Attar is in urgent need of treatment outside Gaza, but the occupation forces have not allowed his transfer.
The situation for journalists in Gaza has become increasingly perilous, with the number of journalist casualties rising to 176 since the onset of the war on October 7, 2023. The Director of the Government Media Office, Ismail Al-Thawabat, has condemned the killings of Palestinian journalists and called for international action against the Israeli occupation forces.
The targeting of media personnel is not a new phenomenon; on September 22, Israeli forces stormed Al Jazeera’s office in Ramallah, closing it for 45 days without explanation. This action is seen as part of a broader effort to suppress free press and obscure the reality of the situation in Gaza and the West Bank. The ongoing violence against journalists raises urgent concerns about press freedom and the safety of those reporting from conflict zones.
