Overview of Qassam Attacks in Northern Gaza
The conflict in the northern Gaza Strip has intensified since October 5, 2023, with the Palestinian resistance, particularly the Qassam Brigades, engaging in a series of confrontations against Israeli occupation forces. According to reports from Al Jazeera, there have been 121 recorded attacks by the Qassam Brigades against Israeli troops in the regions of Jabalia, Beit Lahia, Beit Hanoun, and northern Gaza City. These attacks have included complex ambushes, sniper operations, and the use of explosive devices targeting military vehicles and personnel.
Key Incidents and Military Engagements
Among the notable incidents was the successful assassination of Colonel Ihsan Daqsa, the commander of the Israeli 401st Armored Brigade. The Qassam Brigades targeted various military assets, including 42 Merkava tanks, 25 personnel carriers, and other military equipment, employing advanced weaponry such as
explosive devices and tandem shells. Additionally, they managed to seize an Israeli drone conducting intelligence operations in Jabalia, showcasing their operational capabilities despite the ongoing Israeli siege and bombardment.
Humanitarian Impact and Ongoing Conflict
The conflict has resulted in a significant humanitarian crisis, with reports indicating over 146,000 Palestinian casualties since the escalation began. Most of the casualties are women and children, with many more missing and widespread destruction across the region. The Israeli military's ground invasion aims to prevent Hamas from regaining strength, but many Palestinians view it as an attempt to occupy the northern Gaza Strip and establish a buffer zone after forcibly displacing its residents. The situation continues to deteriorate, raising concerns about one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent history.
