'Insan' Camp: A Lifeline for Displaced Patients in Gaza
In the heart of the central Gaza Strip, the 'Insan' camp has emerged as a crucial refuge for displaced patients and their families, offering them shelter and essential services amid ongoing conflict. Khalil Al-Jarousha, a 56-year-old kidney patient, found solace in this camp after enduring harrowing experiences during the Israeli occupation's storming of Al-Shifa Hospital. Previously forced to sleep in hospital corridors, Al-Jarousha's situation improved significantly upon receiving a tent at the camp, which is strategically located near Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.
The camp, initiated by a group of young entrepreneurs, initially catered to kidney patients but has since expanded to accommodate others in need. It provides shelter, food, health and psychological support, and educational services for children, addressing the pressing needs of families uprooted by the ongoing war in Gaza. Al-Jarousha's son, Ali, expressed gratitude for the camp's provisions, which have made accessing medical care more manageable compared to their previous living conditions.
Challenges Faced by Patients and Families
Despite the positive impact of the 'Insan' camp, challenges persist. Many patients, including Mervat Al-Jadba, who also fled Al-Shifa Hospital, face difficulties in accessing necessary medications and nutritious food due to severe restrictions on humanitarian aid imposed by Israeli authorities. Al-Jadba, along with her children, has experienced hunger and hardship since their displacement, highlighting the dire conditions faced by many in the camp.
The camp's administration, represented by Taghreed Al-Sayfi, has noted a decline in service quality due to these restrictions, which have limited the availability of essential goods and medical supplies. The camp currently houses 160 families and provides educational support for children, including a special class for high school students preparing for exams. However, the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis continue to strain resources, leaving many families in precarious situations as they navigate the challenges of displacement and health care access.
