Houthis Launch Major Attack on US Warships in the Red Sea
In a bold military operation, the Yemeni Houthi group has claimed responsibility for targeting three American destroyers in the Red Sea with a combination of 23 ballistic and winged missiles, as well as a drone. This significant escalation was confirmed by Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree, who stated that the operation was executed as these warships were reportedly en route to support Israel amid ongoing regional tensions.
Saree emphasized that the operation involved a coordinated effort from the naval, missile, and air forces, resulting in what he claimed were direct hits on the US ships. The attack coincided with Houthi operations aimed at Israeli targets in Jaffa and Ashkelon, further intensifying the conflict in the region.
Contrarily, US officials have reported that their Navy successfully intercepted several projectiles launched by the Houthis, stating that no damage was inflicted on the American destroyers. According to preliminary information from the Pentagon, this incident marks one of the largest assaults on US warships in the Middle East, highlighting the escalating hostilities between the Houthis and military forces aligned with the United States and Israel.
The Houthis have intensified their military operations in solidarity with Gaza, targeting Israeli and Israel-linked cargo ships in the Red Sea since November 2023. This response comes in light of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has seen renewed violence since October 7, 2023. As a reaction to these provocations, Washington and London have conducted air strikes on Houthi positions in Yemen, leading the group to declare all American and British vessels as military targets, extending their reach to the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean.
