Voting Begins in the US Elections: A Historic Moment
On November 5, 2024, millions of Americans commenced voting across the East Coast as they prepare to select the 47th president of the United States. This election features a pivotal contest between Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican incumbent Donald Trump. With approximately 230 million eligible voters, around 160 million are registered, although many states permit same-day registration, and North Dakota allows voting without registration.
This election is marked by unprecedented voter engagement, with over 70 million ballots already cast via postal and early voting methods. Amid fears of potential violence following the results, this election is touted as one of the most competitive in US history. Voters will not only choose their president but also elect 34 U.S. Senate members and all 435 members of the House of Representatives, alongside gubernatorial elections in 11 states and two territories, Puerto Rico and American Samoa.
Voting commenced at 5 a.m. EST (10:00 GMT) and will continue until 1 a.m. the following day (06:00 GMT). The stakes are high, as the outcome could either result in the election of the first female president or the re-election of a candidate facing multiple legal challenges. Current opinion polls indicate a near tie in crucial battleground states, with both candidates vying for the 270 electoral votes needed to secure victory.
