Varvara Gracheva has captured the hearts of the French public by reaching the round of 16 at the French Open for the first time in her career. The Franco-Russian athlete, who recently acquired French nationality in June last year, defeated Romanian player Irina-Camelia Begu (127th in the world) in a straight-sets victory on Saturday, finishing 7-5, 6-3. Following Caroline Garcia's footsteps from 2020, Gracheva becomes the first French player to advance to the second week of Roland-Garros this year.
