Unusual Smoke Erupts from the Ground in Azilal, Morocco
In the past few days, the Azilal region of Morocco has become a focal point of concern as white smoke has been observed rising from the ground. This phenomenon, documented extensively on social media, has sparked anxiety among local residents who rely on these lands for grazing livestock. The Tinkaref area, in particular, has seen this unusual occurrence for approximately 20 days, raising fears about the safety of the land.
Experts Weigh In on the Phenomenon
Experts from Morocco's National Center for Scientific and Technical Research have provided insights into the cause of this strange occurrence. Nasr al-Din al-Youbi, a professor at the Faculty of Sciences Semlalia in Marrakesh, noted that such phenomena are not unprecedented in Morocco, referencing similar events in the Fez-Sais region during the 1980s. The emissions could result from the decomposition of peat plants underground or the presence of hot water springs, which can lead to the release of smoke and heat.
Historical Context and Natural Explanations
Further analysis by Mohamed Abdel Zaher, an Assistant Professor of Geophysics, confirmed that the emission of smoke is a natural geophysical phenomenon that has been recorded in various locations, including Dakhla. He explained that the smoke, often accompanied by the distinct smell of hydrogen sulfide, results from the oxidation of a mixture of sulfur and iron found in the ground. This process can generate intense heat and release sulfur to the surface, contributing to the unusual visual and olfactory experience. The Tinkaref region, primarily used for grazing, continues to be a subject of scrutiny as rumors swirl regarding the possibility of a dormant volcano or metallic melting in the area.
