UNICEF Appeals for $9.9 Billion to Aid Children in Conflict Zones
On December 5, 2024, UNICEF announced a significant appeal to raise nearly $10 billion aimed at supporting millions of children affected by conflicts and crises worldwide in 2025. Catherine Russell, the head of UNICEF, highlighted the alarming increase in the humanitarian needs of children, stating that the number of affected children is rising daily. The appeal is crucial as it seeks to address the needs of an estimated 213 million children across 146 countries who will require humanitarian assistance next year.
Focus Areas of the Appeal
The $9.9 billion appeal, while substantial, is only a fraction of the total needs identified. It aims to assist 109 million children by ensuring access to essential services such as primary health care, clean drinking water, education, and psychological support. Additionally, it will focus on monitoring malnutrition and preventing gender-based violence, which are critical issues in conflict zones. Notably, over $1 billion of the funds will be allocated to Afghanistan, marking it as the largest recipient of the appeal, followed by countries like Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Palestinian territories, and Lebanon.
UNFPA's Appeal for Women and Girls
In tandem with UNICEF's efforts, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has launched its own appeal for $1.4 billion to assist 45 million women and girls in 57 countries. UNFPA President Natalia Kanem emphasized the dire situation for women in conflict and disaster zones, where they face significant risks to their health and safety. The appeal aims to ensure that no woman dies in childbirth and that every woman and girl can access essential services, particularly in areas where midwives are urgently needed.
