UN Calls for De-escalation in Lebanon Amid Ongoing Conflict
In a recent interview with Al Jazeera, Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, emphasized the critical role the United Nations plays in de-escalating the ongoing conflict in Lebanon. He pointed out that while the UN is committed to fostering peace through diplomacy, the effectiveness of its efforts hinges on the willingness of political leaders and the cooperation of major countries. Dujarric noted that unlike previous agreements reached regarding conflicts in Syria and the Gaza Strip, there is currently a lack of consensus among the major powers in the UN Security Council concerning Lebanon.
Dujarric highlighted that the UN is utilizing all available tools to address the crisis, aiming to protect civilians in both Lebanon and Israel from the devastating impacts of war. He stressed the urgent need for reforms within the UN to adapt to the complexities of the 21st century, particularly in areas of security, peace, and development. However, he clarified that the immediate focus should be on halting the violence rather than overhauling the organization itself.
The UN spokesman reiterated the limitations faced by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in imposing peace, stating that the current approach primarily involves convincing conflicting parties to reach a resolution. He also pointed out the influence of both regional and international actors on the situation, expressing concern that these leaders are not adequately equipped to ensure the safety of civilians in Lebanon or facilitate the safe return of residents in northern Israel.
