Continued Russian Offensive in Ukraine with Heavy Losses

Ukraine has been fiercely defending itself against a Russian invasion for over two years now. The war, which shows no sign of abating, is causing a significant number of casualties on both sides, including among civilians. Despite the unrelenting attacks from Russia in the east and northeast, Kyiv continues to hold its ground.

According to the Ukrainian Defense Forces, around 1,290 Russian soldiers were reported dead or seriously wounded in the past 24 hours alone, bringing the total to 512,420 since the start of the invasion. These figures, although regularly published by Ukrainian officials, haven't been independently verified. Furthermore, the Ukrainian side does not disclose its own casualty numbers, leaving a gap in the overall impact of the war.

Heavy Equipment Losses for Russia

Aside from human losses, the Russian military is also facing considerable equipment and vehicle losses. As of June 4, the Ukrainian military reports that Russia has lost 7,794 tanks, 15,020 armored vehicles, 13,345 artillery systems, and 10,766 drones, among other equipment. However, like the human casualty numbers, these figures cannot be independently verified.

Western secret services and NATO have also weighed in on the impact. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg highlighted in March 2024 that Russia has likely suffered over 350,000 casualties. Similarly, US, British, and French secret services estimate that Russian casualties are in the range of 350,000 to 500,000 with varying figures on killed and wounded soldiers. Interestingly, the Russian Black Sea Fleet has also faced significant losses due to Ukrainian attacks.

Rise in Ukrainian Cross-border Strikes with Western Arms

A significant shift occurred when US President Joe Biden gave the green light for Ukraine to employ US-supplied weapons against Russian targets beyond the front lines. Recently, a Ukrainian Himars strike hit a Russian S-300 or S-400 anti-aircraft system in the Belgorod region. The attack, confirmed by multiple sources, resulted in several casualties and damaged military equipment.

This authorization marks a new phase in the conflict, allowing Ukraine to strategically target Russian military assets near its border, albeit with certain restrictions. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kouleba and President Volodymyr Zelensky have expressed gratitude but have also indicated the need for more extensive permissions, particularly to target Russian air bases, to effectively counter the daily shelling Ukraine faces.

  • The Ukrainian Defense Forces consistently update the public on Russian losses, underscoring the ongoing heavy toll on both personnel and equipment. This transparency aims to boost morale domestically while countering Russian narratives.
  • Kyiv’s push to expand the use of Western weapons indicates a strategic shift to exert more pressure on Russian forces and infrastructure, potentially as a means to expedite a resolution to the conflict. The involvement of advanced Western weaponry signifies a deepening of international support for Ukraine's defense efforts.
