Ukraine Faces Aid Challenges as Zelensky Pushes for Peace by 2025

The Kiel Institute warns of a potential drop in Western aid to Ukraine by 2025, coinciding with President Zelensky's optimistic push for peace amid ongoing military challenges.

Ukraine's Aid Concerns Amid Potential Political Shifts

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the Kiel Institute has raised alarms about a potential drop in Western aid by 2025. The institute's recent report suggests that if Donald Trump returns to the White House and Germany reduces its support, Ukraine could face a significant aid gap. Currently, military and financial aid from Western donors is projected to be around 59 and 54 billion euros respectively in 2025. However, if these trends continue, aid could plummet to just 29 and 27 billion euros. This reduction poses a serious threat to Ukraine's ongoing defense efforts against Russian aggression.

The Kiel Institute emphasizes that while alternative funding mechanisms, such as NATO-coordinated military contributions or loans from frozen Russian assets, are under discussion, they would not fully replace the essential bilateral aid Ukraine requires. Since the war began in February 2022, Ukraine has received a staggering 397 billion euros in aid, with the European Union and the United States being the largest contributors.

Zelensky's Call for Peace and Stability

In light of the ongoing military challenges and the uncertainty surrounding aid, President Volodymyr Zelensky remains optimistic about achieving peace. During a recent summit in Croatia, he stated, "In October, November, and December, we have a real chance to move things towards peace and lasting stability. The situation on the battlefield creates an opportunity for decisive action to end the war no later than 2025." Zelensky is counting on the leadership of President Biden and strong collaboration among European leaders to secure peace in the region.

As Ukraine's military confronts the realities of its recent offensive in Kursk, soldiers are questioning their strategy amid advancing Russian troops. Despite the challenges, Zelensky's European tour, including meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, aims to reinforce international support and solidarity for Ukraine's fight against aggression.
