UK and Mauritius Forge Historic Agreement Over Chagos Archipelago
In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, the United Kingdom has reached a historic agreement with Mauritius regarding the sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago, effectively putting an end to a territorial dispute that has persisted for nearly six decades. The deal, announced on October 3, 2024, allows the UK to retain control of the strategically vital Diego Garcia military base while recognizing Mauritius' sovereignty over the archipelago. This agreement comes as a result of two years of negotiations, initiated by the previous Conservative government and finalized under the new Labour administration.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the importance of the agreement, stating that it secures the future of the military base, which plays a crucial role in national and global security. The base has been pivotal for the United States and the UK during various military operations, particularly in the Middle East. The agreement allows for a 99-year extension of UK sovereign rights over Diego Garcia, ensuring continued military operations in the region.
The Chagos Archipelago, comprising around 58 islands located in the Indian Ocean, has been a point of contention since the UK retained control after Mauritius gained independence in 1968. The indigenous population, known as the Chagossians, was forcibly removed in the 1960s to facilitate the establishment of the military base. This displacement has led to ongoing legal battles and claims of human rights violations against the UK and US governments.
The recent agreement has garnered support from US President Joe Biden, who reiterated the base's significance for regional stability. However, the UK government's decision has faced criticism from some members of the Conservative Party, who argue that it undermines national security. Despite these concerns, the agreement marks a pivotal moment in UK-Mauritius relations and highlights a commitment to resolving historical grievances through diplomatic channels.
