Two Russian Cargo Ships in Distress Near Crimea
On December 15, 2024, two Russian cargo ships, the Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239, encountered severe weather conditions in the Kerch Strait, prompting emergency assistance from the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations. The Volgoneft 212 ran aground, leading to the evacuation of its 13-member crew, with one confirmed fatality. Meanwhile, the Volgoneft 239 was reported adrift with 14 crew members on board. Rescue operations are currently underway, involving over 50 specialists and multiple rescue units.
Rescue Operations and Environmental Concerns
The Russian authorities have dispatched a Mi-8 helicopter and a support ship to the scene. As the situation unfolds, the ministry is assessing the potential for an oil spill, as both vessels were transporting oil products. Reports indicate that the Volgoneft 212 was carrying approximately 4,300 tons of fuel. Videos circulating on social media depict distressing scenes of one ship appearing half-submerged, with visible traces of hydrocarbons in the water, raising concerns about environmental impact.
Investigations Launched
In response to the incident, Russian authorities have initiated two criminal investigations focusing on potential violations of maritime safety regulations. The Kerch Strait, a crucial maritime passage between the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea, has been a focal point for maritime traffic, and this incident underscores the risks posed by adverse weather conditions in the region.
