Son Heung-min's Father Convicted of Child Abuse
In a shocking development, Son Woong-jung, the father of Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min, has been convicted of child abuse by a South Korean court. On October 12, 2024, the Chuncheon District Court sentenced the 62-year-old to pay a fine of 3 million won (approximately 2,030 euros) under the Child Protection Act. This ruling follows allegations made earlier this year regarding abusive behavior at his football academy, where his son Heung-min's brother, Heung-yun Son, also faced accusations of physical assault against a young player.
The court's decision comes after local prosecutors indicted the Son family members on August 30, prompting the court to impose fines. In addition to the monetary penalty, the three individuals involved, including Heung-yun Son and another person, are required to complete 40 hours of child abuse education. The family has the option to appeal the ruling within a week. Despite the serious nature of the charges, Woong-jung Son expressed regret but maintained that the coaching staff at his academy acted with the children's best interests in mind.
