Apple's iPhone 15 Leads Global Smartphone Sales in Q3 2024

In the third quarter of 2024, Apple's iPhone 15 emerged as the best-selling smartphone worldwide, according to a report by Counterpoint Research. This quarter marked a significant milestone as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max also ranked among the top-selling devices, indicating a growing consumer preference for premium smartphones. Notably, the Pro models accounted for half of total iPhone sales for the first time, showcasing a shift in market dynamics towards higher-value devices.

The surge in demand for the iPhone 15 series can be attributed to various factors, including attractive financing plans and trade-in offers that have made these premium devices more accessible to a broader audience, particularly in emerging markets. Apple's strategic marketing and product positioning have played a crucial role in this success.

Samsung's Strong Performance

Samsung continues to hold a significant share of the smartphone market, with its Galaxy S24 securing a place in the top 10 for the third consecutive quarter. This achievement is notable as it marks the first time since 2018 that a Galaxy S series phone has maintained such a position for this duration within a year. The success of the Galaxy S24 is largely due to the company's emphasis on its Generative AI (GenAI) features, which have resonated well with consumers.

Additionally, Samsung's Galaxy A series has performed admirably, capturing four spots in the top 10 list. The series benefits from its competitive pricing and broad geographical reach, catering to diverse customer segments. However, it faces stiff competition from the more advanced Galaxy S series, which may impact its market positioning.

Xiaomi's Continued Presence in Emerging Markets

Xiaomi's Redmi 13C has also made its mark, maintaining its position on the top-selling list for the second consecutive quarter. The device's combination of high-end specifications and affordability makes it an attractive option for consumers in emerging markets.

Overall, the top 10 smartphones accounted for 19% of total global market sales in Q3 2024, reflecting a clear consumer trend towards premium models. Apple secured four spots, Samsung claimed five, and Xiaomi had one. With advancements in generative AI technologies like Apple Intelligence and Galaxy AI, both companies are well-positioned to enhance their dominance in the competitive smartphone market.
