Tianbing Aerospace Technology's Tianlong-3 rocket accidentally launched during a test, crashing into a mountainside. The incident highlights the challenges in China's space ambitions and the need for closer cooperation between science and government.

Unintended Launch of Tianlong-3 Rocket

On June 30, 2024, Chinese space company Tianbing Aerospace Technology, also known as Space Pioneer, experienced an unexpected event during a test of its Tianlong-3 rocket. The rocket, intended to remain on the launch pad while its engines fired, accidentally took off and crashed into a nearby mountainside. The incident took place near the city of Gongyi in Henan province and was captured on video by several residents, showing the rocket leaving a trail of black smoke before exploding in a dramatic fireball.

Safety Measures and Immediate Response

Local authorities confirmed that the explosion caused a fire away from residential areas, and fortunately, no injuries were reported. Extensive safety measures had been taken in cooperation with the local government, including the evacuation of residents before the test. The failure was attributed to a structural problem in the attachment between the rocket and the ramp, as well as excessive thrust from the second stage engines. The on-board computer quickly reacted by shutting down the engines, preventing further damage.

Comparison with SpaceX's Falcon 9 and Future Plans

The Tianlong-3 rocket is a significant milestone for China's space industry, being a reusable liquid-fuel rocket comparable to SpaceX's Falcon 9. It is designed for repeated launches and can be reused up to ten times. Despite the mishap, Chinese netizens and experts have drawn parallels to the initial challenges faced by SpaceX. A blogger on Weibo noted, 'Musk's Falcon 9 also had many explosions at the beginning.' Space Pioneer plans to address the issues and conduct another test, with the rocket's space launch scheduled for the fall. The Tianlong-3 is part of China's broader efforts to build its satellite Internet network and enhance its technological capabilities.

  • Chinese leader Xi Jinping has recently emphasized the need for closer cooperation between the country's science industry and the state. In a statement, he urged for continued innovation to maintain a competitive edge in science and technology. This call to action aligns with the recent developments in China's private space sector, which has seen significant advancements with companies like Tianbing Aerospace Technology.
  • The Tianlong-3 rocket's design and reusability are seen as revolutionary for China's space ambitions. The rocket's nine engines and liquid-fuel system make it a formidable competitor to Western counterparts. The Tianlong-2, another reusable rocket launched by Tianbing, successfully reached orbit on its first attempt in April 2023, showcasing the company's growing expertise and potential in space exploration.
