Thierry Neuville Crowned WRC Champion in Japan
Thierry Neuville of Hyundai has clinched his first World Rally Championship (WRC) title, marking a significant milestone in his career. The Belgian driver secured the championship on November 24, 2024, during the Rally of Japan, a victory made possible by a dramatic turn of events in the 17th special stage. Ott Tanak, Neuville's closest competitor and former world champion, lost control of his car, leading to a crash that ended his race and handed the title to Neuville. Fortunately, both Tanak and his co-driver emerged unscathed from the incident.
Neuville, who had previously finished as runner-up multiple times, expressed his relief and joy at finally breaking the curse that had plagued his career. "I don't really know what to say... But I think we deserve it. The season has been very complicated, we were under a lot of pressure, especially this weekend," he stated after the race. This victory not only highlights Neuville's perseverance but also marks Hyundai's first drivers' title in the WRC, following their constructors' titles in 2019 and 2020.
A Career of Persistence and Passion
At 36 years old, Neuville's journey to the championship has been a long one, filled with challenges and near misses. He has been a consistent contender in the WRC since his debut in 2009, racing for various teams before settling with Hyundai in 2014. Over the years, he has accumulated 21 WRC victories, including two this season. Neuville's passion for rallying began at a young age, inspired by his father, and he has always dreamed of becoming a rally driver.
The 2024 season saw Neuville capitalize on the absence of key competitors, including Sébastien Ogier and Kalle Rovanperä, who did not participate in all rounds. This opened the door for Neuville, who had a comfortable lead going into the final stages of the championship. Despite the pressure, he managed to maintain his composure and ultimately secured the title before the end of the Japan rally.
The Future of Rallying
With Neuville's championship win, the WRC landscape may be shifting. His victory not only signifies a personal achievement but also sets the stage for Hyundai's continued success in the sport. As Neuville looks forward to the future, he aims to help Hyundai secure the constructors' title as well. His journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring rally drivers, showcasing the importance of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
