Thierry Henry Faces Major Setback as Khephren Thuram Departs French Olympic Team

Thierry Henry faces a major setback as key player Khephren Thuram leaves the French Olympic team to join Juventus Turin. Discover how this impacts the squad and Henry's preparations.

Thierry Henry, coach of the French Olympic team, faces a significant challenge as Khephren Thuram, one of his key players, departs the team. The OGC Nice midfielder, who is on the verge of joining Juventus Turin, has been requested by the Italian club to leave the French squad. This decision comes at a critical time, as the final list of players must be submitted by midnight.

Henry expressed his disappointment during a press conference, acknowledging the impact of Thuram's departure on the team's dynamics. 'It's very hard in terms of what he represents in the game and in the group. It’s not easy, but we’ll deal with it,' he stated. Thuram, who has 20 caps for the Espoirs and served as captain in a friendly match against the United States, was one of the most experienced players in the squad.

Thuram's move to Juventus Turin is expected to be finalized for 25 million euros, including bonuses. This transfer not only affects the French Olympic team but also highlights the ongoing challenges national teams face when club commitments interfere with international duties.

In addition to Thuram, there are concerns about other players potentially leaving the squad. Michael Olise of Crystal Palace might join Bayern Munich, and the Bavarian club has already decided to block Mathys Tel from participating in the Olympics. These developments add to the uncertainty and pressure on Henry as he prepares his team for their first preparation match against Paraguay.

  • Henry now faces the task of reducing his list from 23 to 22 players and deciding on the 4 reserves among the selected 22. The third goalkeeper, Théo De Percin, is almost certain to be one of the reserves.
  • The departure of Thuram, son of Lilian and brother of Marcus, is particularly significant given his leadership and experience. His presence at Clairefontaine since June 16 for the start of preparations underscores his commitment to the team, making his exit even more impactful.
