The Netherlands to Participate in Eurovision 2025 Amid Controversy
The Netherlands has confirmed its participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, set to take place in Basel, Switzerland. This decision comes after extensive discussions with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which have assured the Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS that significant changes will be implemented to enhance artist safety and security at the event. Following the controversial disqualification of Dutch singer Joost Klein during the 2024 contest in Malmö, Sweden, the broadcaster has sought to address concerns regarding the treatment of participants.
Joost Klein, who was disqualified due to an alleged incident involving a female production team member, will not return for the upcoming contest. The EBU defended the disqualification but later closed the investigation against Klein due to insufficient evidence. Klein expressed his gratitude for the support he received globally but stated that he felt too shaken by the events of the past year to participate again. He described the past months as “terrible” and emphasized the need for time to heal.
AVROTROS is now actively seeking new artists to represent the Netherlands, with applications open until the end of November. The broadcaster has emphasized its commitment to ensuring a safer environment for all participants in future contests.
