Rising PTSD Cases in Israel Following Hamas Attack
The recent Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, has led to a significant surge in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) cases among Israelis. According to psychiatrist Professor Shlomo Mendelovich, estimates suggest that between 60,000 and 600,000 individuals may be affected. This alarming statistic highlights the deep psychological impact of the violence on the Israeli population.
Understanding the Symptoms and Impact of PTSD
Professor Mendelovich, who oversees the treatment of PTSD victims at the Shalvata Center for Mental Health, emphasizes the profound effects of PTSD on daily life. Symptoms such as obsessive fear, severe anxiety, and helplessness can severely disrupt normal functioning. He notes that approximately one in three Israelis is currently exhibiting symptoms, a figure that reflects the widespread trauma experienced by the community, particularly among those evacuated from conflict zones.
The Need for Effective Treatment Strategies
Despite the rising cases, Professor Mendelovich points out the lack of a systematic approach to treating PTSD. The complexity of the disorder requires tailored treatment plans that go beyond merely addressing the traumatic event. He warns against group therapy for trauma patients, as it can inadvertently exacerbate their suffering. Effective management involves understanding patients' reactions and fostering communication to ensure they can navigate their trauma without further distress.
