Discover the dual investigations unfolding in Alpes-Maritimes involving tax offenses potentially linked to Charles-Ange Ginésy and embezzlement allegations surrounding the Hopman Cup. Learn the latest updates here.

Tax Offense Investigation Targets Charles-Ange Ginésy

On Wednesday, the Alpes-Maritimes region saw a series of searches conducted as part of a preliminary investigation into alleged tax offenses potentially linked to Charles-Ange Ginésy, the president of the Les Républicains departmental council. The investigation, initiated by the National Financial Prosecutor's Office (PNF) at the end of January, followed a report from Tracfin, the financial intelligence unit under the Ministry of the Economy. This information was confirmed by a judicial source and reported by the regional daily Nice-Matin.

The conducted searches covered the departmental council and five other locations within the department. However, no hearings have been reported as underway. The operations involved approximately twenty investigators from the National Anti-Fraud Office (Onaf), a former judicial financial investigation service, and were overseen by a magistrate from the PNF. When approached by AFP, the departmental council refrained from commenting.

Parallel Investigation: The Hopman Cup Case

Simultaneously, Wednesday also saw searches executed at the town hall and the Nice Tourist Office tied to a separate preliminary investigation concerning the organization of the previous year's Hopman Cup, a mixed tennis competition. This particular investigation has been assigned to the Montpellier research division and involves allegations of embezzlement of public funds, a case that the Nice public prosecutor’s office has passed over to the PNF as well.

The investigation follows a complaint filed by certain members of the Nice Lawn Tennis Club's management, who opposed the rest of the committee. The city of Nice confirmed the occurrence of the searches in a morning press release, noting that their legal team has been engaged to address any potential damages they might have incurred.

  • The dual investigations illustrate the ongoing efforts and significant resources dedicated by French authorities to combat financial improprieties at multiple levels of governance and public event management. With the involvement of specialized units like Tracfin and the Onaf, these cases underscore the importance of maintaining transparency and accountability within public offices and organizations hosting major events.
  • Investigations such as these not only aim at specific allegations but also serve a broader purpose of deterring future offenses by signaling robust enforcement mechanisms. As the authorities move forward with these preliminary stages, the outcomes could have far-reaching implications for the involved individuals and institutions.
