Syrian Opposition Gains Control Over Deir Ezzor
On December 7, the Syrian armed opposition, under the 'Deterrence of Aggression' operations room, successfully entered Deir Ezzor province after the Syrian regime and its affiliated militias withdrew from the area. This transition was facilitated by an agreement between the regime and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), with Russian backing. The opposition's entry into the city was initially stalled by the international coalition against ISIS, which issued warnings to prevent clashes without American approval. After three days of waiting, the opposition forces entered the city without incident, marking a significant shift in control. Military analyst Saad Al-Sharea noted that the SDF's withdrawal was influenced by the presence of military groups on the southern and western fronts, as well as a lack of support from the international coalition, which did not authorize SDF movements west of the Euphrates River.
The SDF's retreat allowed them to seize weapons and ammunition left behind by the regime at key locations, including Deir Ezzor military airport. Following this, the SDF initiated combing campaigns in the eastern countryside, urging residents to remain indoors due to heightened tensions. Reports indicated that a military convoy from Deir Ezzor targeted an SDF checkpoint, further escalating the situation. Concurrently, the region has been subjected to intense Israeli airstrikes aimed at military sites, including the military airport, with concerns over the presence of strategic equipment in the area.
Despite the military developments, Deir Ezzor is grappling with significant challenges, including chaos, theft, and deteriorating public services. Residents have reported frequent power and water outages, alongside bread shortages and rising prices. However, some rural areas outside SDF control are beginning to stabilize, thanks to community efforts to restore security and essential services.
