The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have announced their intent to advance towards new positions held by the Sudanese army in Sennar State, following their recent control of the Bunzaga area. This development comes amidst ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has seen significant territorial shifts since the outbreak of war in April 2023. The RSF previously claimed control of Singa, the state capital, while the army retains control over the second-largest city, Sennar. Recent military engagements have led to the army, alongside the Popular Resistance Brigades, regaining control of the town of Jalqni, where human rights organizations have accused the RSF of committing atrocities against civilians.
Amidst the violence, Amina Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, visited Sudan to engage with local leaders, including the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan. During her visit, discussions focused on the humanitarian crisis exacerbated by the conflict, with calls for the UN to exert pressure on the RSF to allow aid to reach affected populations. The Sudanese government has taken steps to facilitate humanitarian efforts, including opening the Adre border crossing. However, challenges remain as the RSF is accused of obstructing aid deliveries.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan has raised alarm among international observers, with the situation deteriorating and impacting civilian lives significantly. The UN has been urged to take more decisive action to address the humanitarian needs of those affected by the war.
