Death Threats Prompt Security Measures at Marseille's Baumettes Prison
The deputy head of detention at Marseille's Baumettes prison has been placed under protection following serious death threats. Judicial and police sources confirmed that the deputy director, along with the prison's director, has been removed from their duties amid escalating security concerns. The threats reportedly originated from a video circulating on social media, which offered a 'contract' of 120,000 euros for the execution of the deputy director, revealing his home address in the process.
The threats are linked to a particularly dangerous inmate, Gabriel O., a suspected leader of the DZ Mafia, who recently made threatening remarks towards the prison's administration after contesting his detention conditions. Following these incidents, the inmate faced disciplinary action, resulting in 20 days of solitary confinement.

In a related incident, two armed individuals were apprehended near the prison after a police chase. The suspects, who were reportedly wearing balaclavas, discarded a loaded automatic pistol during their attempt to flee. They were found with a knife and are believed to have been involved in the threats against the prison officials. The authorities have since increased security measures around the facility, deploying police patrols to monitor the area.
An investigation has been launched into the threats, focusing on 'criminal association with a view to preparing a crime' and the possession of illegal weapons. This situation highlights the growing concerns regarding the safety of prison staff, as threats against them have reached unprecedented levels, according to prison sources.
