Vladimir Kara-Mourza Hospitalized in Russian Prison
Russian opposition leader Vladimir Kara-Mourza, who survived two poisoning attempts before his incarceration, has been transferred to a prison hospital, according to his wife, Evguénia. She announced this news on Facebook, noting that his lawyers were denied access to him. Kara-Mourza's health has been a growing concern for his supporters.
Health Concerns and Previous Poisonings
At 42, Kara-Mourza, a Russian-British citizen, is reportedly suffering from polyneuropathy, a condition attributed to the poisonings he endured in 2015 and 2017. These incidents, according to investigative reports from Bellingcat, The Insider, and Der Spiegel, involved the Russian secret services. The UK has called for his immediate release to receive urgent medical care.
Harsh Punishment and International Recognition
In April 2023, Kara-Mourza was sentenced to 25 years in a Siberian penal colony for 'treason' and spreading 'false information' about the conflict in Ukraine. Despite the severe sentence, he has continued his activism, even earning recognition from the Pulitzer Prize jury in May for his courageous articles written from prison. This situation echoes the tragic fate of another Russian opposition figure, Alexeï Navalny, who died in February under suspicious circumstances in an Arctic prison.
