Russian Missile Attack in Kyiv Damages Multiple Embassies

On December 20, 2024, a Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, resulted in significant damage to six embassies, including those of the Palestinian Authority, Argentina, Portugal, Albania, North Macedonia, and Montenegro. The attack, which occurred early in the morning, led to at least one fatality and left 12 others injured, with five requiring hospitalization. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry condemned the assault as a "barbaric attack" on diplomatic facilities.

The embassies were housed in the same building, which suffered shattered windows and damaged doors. The Portuguese Foreign Minister, Paulo Rangel, confirmed that while the damage was described as "relatively minor," it was unacceptable under international diplomatic norms. He announced that Portugal had summoned the Russian ambassador in Lisbon to present a formal protest against the attack. Other countries affected, including North Macedonia, reported similar damage but no injuries among their diplomatic staff.

The Ukrainian Air Force Command stated that five ballistic missiles were launched at Kyiv, all of which were intercepted. However, debris from the intercepted missiles caused injuries and damage in the city center, including to an office building, a road, and a gas pipeline, as well as igniting fires in multiple locations. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that the missile strikes targeted Ukrainian military installations in retaliation for an earlier Ukrainian attack on a chemical plant in Russia's Rostov region.
