Russian Judokas Shine at Abu Dhabi Grand Slam
The recent Grand Slam tournament in Abu Dhabi marked a triumphant return for Russian judokas, who clinched a total of ten medals, including five golds. This event was particularly significant as it was the first major judo competition in the new Olympic cycle, following a period of inactivity for athletes due to restrictions imposed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The Russian team, competing under the International Judo Federation flag, showcased their skills and determination, particularly in the women's and men's categories.
Highlights of the Competition
On the opening day, Sabina Gilyazova set the tone by winning gold in the women's 48 kg category. She faced Serbian Andrea Stoyadinov in the finals, whom she had previously lost to multiple times. Gilyazova executed a decisive overhead throw just seconds before the match concluded, securing her victory. "I didn’t look at the scoreboard and didn’t know how much was left until the end of the fight," Gilyazova stated, emphasizing her focus and determination throughout the match.
Iznaur Saayev also delivered an impressive performance, winning gold in the 60 kg category after a grueling match that extended into the 'golden score' phase. He expressed his relief and excitement at overcoming a seasoned opponent. In the men's 66 kg final, Murad Chopanov managed to turn the tide in his favor despite a rocky start, showcasing the resilience that characterized the Russian team's performance throughout the tournament.
Mixed Results on Day Two
The second day brought mixed results for the Russian team, with only two bronze medals being secured. Danil Lavrentyev faced off against fellow Russian Karen Galstyan, with Galstyan ultimately taking the victory. Lavrentyev expressed dissatisfaction with his performance, highlighting the need for better preparation and focus in future competitions. David Karapetyan also earned a bronze in the 81 kg category, marking a return to form after a string of competitions without medals.
Despite some setbacks, the Russians continued to excel, winning two more golds on the final day. Mansur Lorsanov triumphed in the 90 kg category, dedicating his victory to his grandfather, who is currently in the hospital. The tournament concluded with a mix of emotions, including a notable incident between teammates Arman Adamyan and Niyaz Bilalov, which highlighted the competitive spirit and pressure faced by athletes.
The Russian judokas will next compete at the prestigious Grand Slam in Tokyo, scheduled for December 7 and 8, as they aim to build on their success in Abu Dhabi and prepare for the upcoming Olympic Games.
