Vinaya Habosi Faces Domestic Violence Allegations Amidst Controversy
Racing 92's Fijian international winger, Vinaya Habosi, has been embroiled in a serious legal matter after being taken into custody for alleged domestic violence. The Nanterre prosecutor's office confirmed that Habosi was summoned for a training course aimed at combating domestic and sexist violence as an alternative to prosecution, following an incident at his home in Hauts-de-Seine on September 16, 2024.
According to reports, police responded to a domestic dispute involving Habosi and his wife, during which witnesses alleged that the player pushed and struck his partner in the presence of their infant child. Habosi reportedly exhibited signs of drunkenness at the time, with a blood alcohol level of 1.05 mg/L. Although the player's wife did not suffer visible injuries and declined medical assistance, she confirmed to authorities that an altercation occurred.
The incident has raised significant concerns within the rugby community, as Racing 92 has stated they will await further information from the authorities before making any official comments. The club is expected to take disciplinary action against Habosi, who had just participated in a match against Clermont prior to the incident.
This situation is not the first controversy surrounding Habosi, who was previously dismissed from the Fijian Drua franchise due to a violation of the team's conduct code, which reportedly involved an assault on a teammate. The player joined Racing 92 in 2023 and was selected to represent Fiji at the World Cup in France.
The Nanterre prosecutor's office has made it clear that they reserve the right to prosecute Habosi should he fail to comply with the training course requirements. This incident highlights ongoing issues of domestic violence in sports and the need for accountability among athletes.
