Qatar and Turkey Strengthen Bilateral Relations
In a significant diplomatic meeting, Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara to discuss bilateral relations and pressing regional issues, particularly the ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza and Lebanon. This meeting coincided with the tenth session of the Supreme Strategic Committee, which aims to enhance cooperation between the two nations across various sectors.
The discussions included updates on ceasefire negotiations and potential prisoner exchanges, reflecting both countries' commitment to regional stability. The Supreme Strategic Committee is set to address a wide array of topics, including trade and economic relations, culminating in the signing of several agreements that will bolster cooperation, especially in trade.
Key Agreements and Economic Cooperation
During this session, Turkey and Qatar are expected to sign nine agreements covering economy, defense, and culture. Turkish Ambassador to Doha, Mustafa Goksu, highlighted that the Turkish-Qatari committee, established in 2014, has successfully signed 108 joint agreements to date. The trade volume between the two countries has reportedly increased fivefold over the last decade, with over a thousand Turkish companies operating in Qatar and nearly 200 Qatari firms in Turkey.
Goksu emphasized the importance of Turkish-Qatari cooperation in promoting regional peace and security, particularly in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He reiterated that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state is essential for healing the wounds inflicted by ongoing conflicts.
Commitment to Regional Peace and Humanitarian Support
Both leaders underscored their nations' roles in providing humanitarian support and fostering dialogue to resolve crises in the region. Goksu stated that Turkey and Qatar are dedicated to alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people and upholding their legitimate rights. The two countries aim to work collaboratively towards a comprehensive solution that aligns with the aspirations of the Palestinian people for statehood.
