Qatar Energy announces plans to double urea production capacity to over 12.4 million tons by 2030, addressing global food security needs amid rising population growth. The initiative includes a significant expansion in gas production and renewable energy projects.

Qatar Energy to Boost Urea Production Significantly by 2030

Qatar Energy has announced ambitious plans to enhance its urea production capacity, aiming to increase output from the current 6 million tons to over 12.4 million tons annually. This substantial boost, which represents a 106% increase, is set to be achieved through the establishment of four new production lines in Mesaieed Industrial City. The first of these lines is expected to commence operations before 2030. CEO Saad Al-Kaabi highlighted the increasing global demand for urea, driven by population growth projections of 1.5 to 2 billion people over the next 20 to 30 years, emphasizing the critical role of urea in food production.

Al-Kaabi also noted that the project will leverage the advanced infrastructure available in the region, including one of the largest fertilizer and chemical export ports in the Middle East and North Africa. This initiative positions Qatar to become the urea production capital of the world, enhancing the country's role in global food security while managing its natural resources responsibly.

Qatar's Energy Sector Expansion: A Multidimensional Approach

In addition to urea production, Qatar Energy is simultaneously advancing its gas production capabilities. Al-Kaabi confirmed that work on the North Field gas production expansion is on track, which will increase Qatar's total LNG production by 85%. This field is noted as the largest natural gas field globally, shared with Iran.

Moreover, Qatar Energy is also focusing on renewable energy, with plans for a third solar power plant in the Dukhan area. This initiative aims to double the country's total solar energy production to 4,000 megawatts by 2030, reflecting a commitment to sustainable energy solutions alongside traditional energy sources.

  • Qatar Energy's strategic initiatives are not only aimed at meeting the rising global demand for fertilizers but also at ensuring energy security and sustainability. The company's commitment to doubling its urea production capacity aligns with global agricultural needs and reinforces its position as a key player in the fertilizer market. The North Field expansion is a significant aspect of Qatar's energy strategy, further solidifying its status as a leading LNG exporter. The integration of renewable energy projects, such as the solar power plant, highlights Qatar Energy's dedication to diversifying its energy portfolio and contributing to a more sustainable future.
