Putin Highlights the Role of Oreshnik Missile Systems in Nuclear Strategy
Russian President Vladimir Putin has emphasized that the development of the Oreshnik medium-range missile systems significantly reduces the necessity for nuclear weapons in responding to threats. During a recent meeting of the Presidential Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights, Putin stated, "A sufficient number of these modern weapons systems will practically lead to the point where there is no need to use nuclear weapons." He noted that rather than tightening the nuclear doctrine, Russia is focused on improving its capabilities with the Oreshnik system.
The Oreshnik missile, described as a hypersonic weapon, is designed for precision strikes without the radioactive fallout associated with nuclear arms. Military experts, including retired colonel Viktor Litovkin, have pointed out that the Oreshnik can effectively target specific objects on the battlefield, thus providing a tactical advantage without the destructive consequences of nuclear warfare. Putin further elaborated that the missile's capabilities allow it to hit targets throughout Europe, including well-protected sites, with a speed of up to 10 Machs.
Strategic Deployment and Future Plans
The first combat use of the Oreshnik occurred on November 21, during a strike on the Yuzhmash plant in Dnepropetrovsk, marking a significant milestone in its operational readiness. Following this, Putin announced plans for serial production of the missile systems and indicated that they would be deployed in Belarus by the second half of 2025, in response to perceived threats from the U.S. and Germany.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has expressed support for this deployment, asserting that it would serve as a deterrent against potential aggression. He mentioned that approximately 30 sites are being considered for the missile systems, which he believes will compel adversaries to reconsider their military strategies before advancing towards Belarus.
