Allegations of Sexual Misconduct at Bordeaux Montaigne University
The respected teacher and philosopher, Barbara Stiegler, has come forward with serious allegations of rape and sexual harassment against a former vice-president of the University of Bordeaux Montaigne. According to her complaint, these incidents occurred in May 2020 and between 2017 and 2020. Stiegler detailed a harrowing experience during a party at her home, where she claims the professor imposed digital penetration on her. She described the incident as akin to 'incest' and felt paralyzed and stunned, unable to speak out due to the familial-like operation at the university.
Judicial Investigation and Initial Dismissal
A judicial investigation was initiated in February following Stiegler's complaint, which was filed last year. The prosecution confirmed the investigation for 'rape, sexual assault(s), and sexual harassment' after information surfaced from the newspaper Sud Ouest. The accused professor was indicted for rape and placed under judicial supervision. Notably, a prior investigation was closed without further action in April 2023.
Wider Impact and Institutional Response
The case has also brought to light accusations from around ten students who reported inappropriate behavior and sexual assault by the same professor. One student recounted how, during a research project preparation, she was welcomed into his home while he was completely naked, leading her to abandon the project. The university's management and reporting unit were informed of these allegations in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Following an administrative investigation, the professor was suspended for a year in 2022/2023 and subsequently banned from teaching for another year starting February 1, 2024, by the disciplinary commission of the University of Toulouse-Capitole.
Despite these measures, the disciplinary section did not sanction the rape allegations, citing a lack of material evidence but did confirm acts of 'enforced nudity in the context of work meetings as in the private setting,' a point the respondent does not dispute. The controversy has sparked feminist demonstrations and criticism against the former university president, Lionel Larré. The University of Bordeaux Montaigne has refrained from commenting on the ongoing criminal case.
- Barbara Stiegler's allegations have not only triggered a judicial investigation but have also opened a broader discussion about the culture and handling of sexual misconduct within academic institutions. The case highlights the challenges victims face in coming forward and the often slow and complex nature of judicial and administrative processes.
- The controversy surrounding the university's handling of the case has led to increased scrutiny and calls for more stringent measures to protect students and staff from sexual harassment and assault. Feminist groups and student organizations have been vocal in their support for the victims and in demanding accountability from the university administration.
