Mourad Tsimpou: The Prodigy Pianist's Tragic End
Mourad Tsimpou, known to many as the 'Zidane of the piano', passed away this Saturday at the tender age of 19. Mourad succumbed to a rare liver disease he had battled since childhood, as confirmed by Salim Lebghil, one of the two directors of 1392 Records. He breathed his last at the Necker children's hospital in Paris, leaving behind a legacy that began in the most unexpected of places.
From Hospital Halls to Concert Halls
Mourad's musical journey began in 2018 during a visit to the Marseille Timone hospital. Like the legendary footballer Zinedine Zidane, Mourad hailed from Castellane in Marseille's northern districts. It was here, at just 14 years old, that he encountered a piano for the first time. Inspired by an impromptu Chopin piece he heard online, Mourad reproduced it flawlessly the next day, astonishing everyone around him. A fellow patient captured the moment on video, and it quickly went viral, catapulting Mourad into the limelight.
Mourad's talent was undeniable. Despite never having taken music lessons, he had a natural gift for the piano, playing without a score and possessing what many described as 'perfect pitch'. This innate ability led to a rapid rise in his career. By the age of 19, Mourad had released two albums and was working on a third. He collaborated with notable artists like André Manoukian and rap star Soprano, and performed at significant events such as the Top 14 rugby final in 2021 and an OM match at the Vélodrome in Marseille.
But Mourad's journey was not just about music. He was a beacon of hope for many young people in his neighborhood, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and break down barriers. 'My goal would be for all young people to say to themselves: look, he plays the piano, there are no barriers,' he once said. Tragically, his promising career was cut short by his illness. Mourad will be laid to rest in the Comoros, where his family originates. A Leetchi fundraiser has been set up to support his family during this difficult time.
