Pascal Canfin Resigns from Renaissance Amidst Political Discontent
Pascal Canfin, a prominent Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and former Minister Delegate for Development, has announced his resignation from the executive board of Renaissance, the political party founded by Emmanuel Macron. In a letter addressed to Stéphane Séjourné, the party's Secretary General, Canfin expressed his deep disagreement with the national strategy of Renaissance, which he describes as "toxic" due to its participation in the current government led by Michel Barnier.
Canfin highlighted that the choices made since July 7 do not align with the outcomes of the legislative elections or the dynamics of the Republican front that previously helped avoid extreme right influence. He criticized Renaissance for supporting a government that he believes is overly aligned with right-wing ideologies and reliant on the National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen.
Despite his resignation, Canfin affirmed his commitment to the progressive values that have been central to Macron's vision since 2017. He stated, "I do not regret for a single moment this choice that allowed us, collectively, to begin to transform Europe. I will continue to do so, within the Together for Europe delegation." His departure reflects a broader divide within Renaissance regarding the party's direction and alliances, particularly in the context of rising far-right sentiments in French politics.
The internal turmoil within Renaissance was further exacerbated when Michel Barnier reprimanded the new Minister of the Economy, Antoine Armand, for his remarks about not collaborating with the National Rally. This incident illustrates the tensions within the party as it navigates its position amidst increasing far-right pressures. A senior member of Renaissance lamented the shift away from the party's foundational principles, stating, "The DNA of Macronie is to go beyond and fight against the extreme right. Going beyond is over. And the fight against the extreme right... We have Marine Le Pen who presses the button, the Prime Minister who gives in. It's absolutely devastating."
