Vigilance Over COVID-19 Ahead of Paris 2024 Olympics
As the Paris 2024 Olympics approach, Health Minister Frédéric Valletoux has expressed vigilance regarding the ongoing COVID-19 situation. He reassured the public that while the virus remains present, there hasn't been a significant surge in cases. With over 10,500 athletes arriving in France, some positive cases have been reported, including five members of the Australian women's water polo team. The Minister stated that masks are not currently mandated in sports venues, but precautionary measures are being considered as the situation evolves.
Security Concerns Heighten Amid Political Tensions
The political climate surrounding the Olympics has intensified, particularly concerning the participation of the Israeli delegation. Amid calls from Rebellious France and other groups for Israel's exclusion due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, French officials have reaffirmed their support for the Israeli athletes. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced that Israeli teams will receive round-the-clock protection during the games, reflecting the heightened security measures in response to potential threats.
Espionage Threats and Security Measures
In addition to health concerns, security threats loom large as France prepares for the Olympics. Interior Minister Darmanin revealed that around 1,000 individuals were turned away from the games due to espionage suspicions, particularly related to Russian operatives. With a million security checks conducted, officials are committed to ensuring the safety and integrity of the events. The presence of police and military in Paris has increased significantly, with the highest terror alert level declared. Reports of sports espionage have also surfaced, exemplified by a drone incident involving New Zealand's women's soccer team.
