Palestinian Factions Prepare for Prisoner Exchange with Israel
In a significant development, Ziyad al-Nakhalah, the Secretary-General of the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine, announced that Palestinian factions possess sufficient Israeli prisoners to negotiate a prisoner exchange with Israel. This statement was made during a recorded address commemorating the first anniversary of the conflict in Gaza, highlighting the ongoing tensions and the complex negotiations surrounding the release of detainees.
Al-Nakhalah emphasized the need for unity among Palestinian resistance forces, stating that Hamas has been authorized to lead the political negotiations regarding the prisoner exchange. He criticized Israel for evading its responsibilities and imposing conditions that approach surrender, which he believes undermines the potential for a peaceful resolution.
According to estimates, Israel holds 101 prisoners in Gaza, part of a larger group of at least 239 Israelis captured during the conflict that began on October 7, 2023. Previous temporary truces have seen some prisoners exchanged, but ongoing Israeli military actions have reportedly resulted in the deaths of numerous captives.
The Secretary-General reiterated the importance of a comprehensive solution that includes the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, reconstruction efforts, and the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails. He highlighted the necessity of solidarity among Palestinian factions, including coordination with Hezbollah fighters on the Lebanese front, to confront the challenges posed by Israel.
Despite ongoing mediation efforts and multiple proposals aimed at ending hostilities and facilitating prisoner exchanges, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has continued to introduce new conditions. These stipulations include maintaining control over key areas such as the Philadelphi Corridor and the Rafah crossing, which Hamas opposes, insisting instead on a full withdrawal and cessation of aggression as prerequisites for any agreement.
